Rutger van Leyden

Rutger is a professional conductor and a specialist in varied genres. He has assisted Ricardo Chailly, conducting opera performances by the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He has conducted the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and Percussionists of The Hague, and currently is also principal conductor of Combustion Chamber, a contemporary-music orchestra.
He has won prestigious awards at home and abroad, and he is a specialist in operettas and musicals, currently also conductor of de Gooise Operette en Operakoor Almere.
Rutger van Leyden studied philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, then orchestral conducting under Pierre Stoll and Lucas Vis at the Royal Music Conservatory in The Hague, graduating in 1988. He has participated in master classes with Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Peter Eötvös and Anton Kersjes. At a young age he studied classical and jazz piano under Karel Hilsum at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA.
